Affordable, Fast and Punctual
Gautrain is not only about a train. It is about people who are proud of what their nation can achieve. People who yearn for freedom of movement. People who hunger for upward mobility. People who demand available, fast, punctual service. It is about people on the move.
This Johannesburg rapid rail link strives to support the strategic goals of the Gauteng Provincial Government, which are accelerated economic growth development and infrastructure delivery, with an emphasis on, among others, the promotion of tourism.
Whilst achieving strategic goals, Gautrain has not forgotten about those people it moves every day – the teller on his way to work, the business traveller flying in for the day, the student on her way to class and the tourist eager to experience Gauteng.
Affordable fares, safety and security, and convenience all come first.
Gautrain has a balanced approach to its fare policy, aimed at making its services accessible to most, whilst safety and security remains Gautrain’s highest priority, emphasised by adherence to the highest international standards – highly-trained personnel and CCTV satellite monitoring technology.
Convenience equals travelling from O.R. Tambo International Airport to the business district of Sandton in only 15 minutes, whilst reliance on Gautrain’s punctuality reduces the chances of missing flights.
Gautrain retains a unique place in the transport network and is not in competition with any other transport mode. As a mass transport facility, Gautrain has a backbone function in the transport system. Each mode of transport has its own function in a holistic transport network and needs to be fully-integrated with each other – hence the integration with the Pretoria Bus Rapid Transport service at the Gautrain Pretoria and Hatfield Stations.
Pretoria Station links to several important destinations. In determining these destinations, cognisance was taken of tourism within Pretoria and the fact that the station could play an important role. The following attractions and destinations are important places in and around Pretoria Station and, hence, appropriate linkages are to be created to facilitate access and connectivity to:
- Proposed Salvokop Village and Freedom Park, with Salvokop being developed as a high-density residential and mixed-use neighbourhood, and Freedom Park as a major tourist attraction
- Voortrekker Monument
- UNISA
- Museum precinct, which includes City Hall, Transvaal Museum and other museums
- Church Square
- National Zoological Gardens and the National Cultural History Museum
- Union Buildings
- Nelson Mandela Development Corridor and the Department of Trade and Industry development
Further examples of Gautrain’s integration are its train, bus and parking services, which can be used separately or jointly by transferring from one to the other. These services are all accessed by means of a contactless smart card – the Gautrain Gold Card. Buses provide connectivity to suburbs around stations, including Park, Rosebank, Sandton, Marlboro, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria, Hatfield and Rhodesfield stations.
Having been part of Gauteng’s urban fabric for three years now, Gautrain is starting to change the lifestyles of people living, working and playing in Gauteng. Hopping on and off at stations for either work or leisure is becoming the norm – stress free!
Centered close to various points of interests, Gautrain brings people not only to their place of work, but also closer to various facilities such as hospitals, educational institutions, shopping centres and places of entertainment.
Become one of those people. Someone who yearns for freedom of movement, is upwardly mobile, and who demands available, fast, punctual service. Be the tourist to Pretoria, the businessman on his way to work, or the student on her way to success.
Travel with Gautrain.
