African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa in Cape Town, part of the Marriott group, re-opened yesterday (18 August) after being closed for repairs following a fire that broke out on 9 August.

The fire is believed to have started in the sauna room of the spa, with four people hospitalised and six adults and three children treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

“The fire was relatively small and was contained within a limited area on the first floor of the hotel,” said Mark Satterfield, Marriott International business leader in South Africa. “We have conducted a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and, to ensure the wellbeing of all, the investigation confirms the safety of the building. There was no structural damage caused – the impact was restricted to smoke and water damage.”

“The staff followed all procedures in place for dealing with an emergency, and these are in line with international standards and procedures,” said Danny Bryer, Director of Sales and Marketing for Protea Hotels.
