Background
Moorhouse Properties, a Nigerian-owned hotel group, owns and operates a variety of international and locally-branded hotels in Nigeria, including MGallery Ikoyi, Ibis Lagos Airport, Novotel Port Harcourt and the Moorhouse Budget Hotels. Epe Resort and Spa is its latest project and it opened in January.
Where Is It?
It is located in a lush, green environment on the outskirts of Lagos, about an hour’s drive from the city centre. Epe is a town and local government area, located on the north side of the Lekki Lagoon. The resort is just three kilometres from the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and is ideal for business travellers who have business to conduct around Lekki and Ajah, one of the newer commercial areas in Lagos.
Room Facilities
There are 40 rooms, made up of luxurious, deluxe and superior rooms. Most of the rooms have terraces with a couple of chairs and a table – ideal for relaxing outdoor drinks. My room, a deluxe room, had a king-size bed, 32-inch flat-screen TV with selected satellite channels, as well as local Nigerian stations, mini-bar, coffee machine and a comfortable work area, complemented by 24-hour free Wi-Fi access. I fancy a shower over a bath, so I wasn’t bothered by the absence of a bath, although the luxurious rooms do come with ‘luxurious’ bath suites. I quite liked the floor in my room fitted with finished chocolate-brown dark wood and a soft rug, which further lent itself to the feelings of comfort and style. Each room is also fitted with an electronic safe, whilst the hotel also offers same-day laundry services at an affordable cost. For now, Epe Resort & Spa is offering a flat rate of about $230 per night for any of the rooms, and that includes a buffet breakfast.
Restaurant And Bar
At present, Epe Resort & Spa has one restaurant, with the rooftop restaurant scheduled to open towards the end of 2013. The Al Fresco restaurant prepares continental and local menus, both a la carte and buffet. Breakfast is served from 07h00 to 10h30, while dinner takes place between 18h30 and 21h30, and there’s a special brunch on request. The indoor area of the restaurant is relatively small. It can take about 40 guests at a time, while the outdoor area overlooking the multi-purpose lawn tennis court and swimming pool is expansive. The bar is inside the restaurant. There’s in-room service available 18 hours of the day.
Meetings & Conference Facilities
There are two meeting and conferencing facilities at Epe Resort & Spa, both fitted with a projector. While the boardroom can take about 16 people, the conference centre arranged in classroom style can take up to 60 delegates. It’s an inviting venue for a meeting or conference, due to the lush, green surroundings and the ability to host outdoor social functions, in and around one’s meetings.
Leisure Facilities
The hotel has a lawn tennis court that is also marked out for basketball, whilst there’s also table tennis. The spa at the resort is scheduled to open soon. The Lekki-Epe Expressway can be used to access the new Lakowe Lakes Golf & Country Estate just a few kilometres away, should you be interested in a round of golf.
Verdict
If I’m extremely critical, the lighting in my room was rather dim. But aside from that, I found the accommodation comfortable, the food and service good, and the location quite convenient, if you’re looking for something away from the hustle and bustle of Lagos itself, in a quiet location, and with good access to Lekki and Ajah.
