What’s it Like?
As one expects from Sheraton, the hotel itself is of a high quality, with stunning finishings and excellent service. But, it is the setting that will take your breath away, located on the beach with amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean. What is nice is that Sheraton have used local traditions and built a property to resemble a typical African village, whilst retaining the main features of a high-class hotel.
Where is it?
The hotel is built into the hillside and is perched on a tranquil stretch of the Atlantic coast. Either side of it are stretches of golden beaches and lush tropical gardens. The hotel is just 10 minutes drive from Banjul International Airport and 20 minutes drive from Kairaba Avenue, Banjul’s business district.
Rooms
The hotel boasts 194 elegant and well-appointed rooms, including junior suites and a presidential villa with private pool and executive work areas. Each room has stunning panoramic views of the ocean via a private balcony. The rooms have contemporary and African designs, with distinctive features such as marble bathrooms, invigorating power showers and signature Sweet Sleeper Bed™. The rooms come with 32-inch LCD screens (with selected satellite channels), as well as the standard tea and coffee-making facilities, iron and ironing board. High-speed Internet access is available in all rooms at a rate of 16 euros (approximately R155) per day and there is wireless access in all public areas.
Restaurants & Bars
The Balafon Beachfront Restaurant offers a ‘surf and turf’ (steak and seafood) mix of flavours with local ingredients from land and sea. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are offered here.
The Crematata Restaurant offers all-day dining in a relaxed setting, with scenic views of the ocean and a varied menu.
The Bar-A-Cuda Bar is favoured for its poolside location and is the perfect spot for outdoor relaxation.
The Treetop Lobby Bar is a place to unwind after a very busy day, whilst listening to mellow music from a live band.
Business & Meeting Facilities
In such a beautiful setting, it’s hard to imagine anything business-like taking place at the Sheraton Gambia, but the hotel is actually more than well catered for in the conferencing department. The main feature is the 600 square metre Kuntah Kinteh Ballroom, which can cater for up to 800 guests and features a generous pre-function area – the perfect setting for pre-event drinks. The conference centre also boasts eight additional meeting rooms, which are ideal for seminars, meetings, presentations or smaller special occasions. These rooms can accommodate between 25 and 60 delegates. Each meeting room boasts high-speed internet access and state-of-the-art audio visual equipment.
Leisure Facilities
It’s difficult to get away from the beach being the main attraction and with just a 30-second walk required, it really is the perfect location for relaxation and privacy. Further to that, the hotel has a fitness center, two outdoor swimming pools and various water sports activities, on offer. For those who crave pampering and tranquility, the Naantage Spa offers a mix of sauna, steam room, massage and beauty treatments.
Verdict
As the hotel proclaims, it really is a little piece of paradise. But, beyond that, the service is good, the hotel is in fantastic condition and there are lots of options for conferencing, should one be looking for an alternative venue along the West African Coast.
