Hotel check: Town Lodge Airport Johannesburg

1132

Background

The City Lodge group of hotels has established a reputation since its inception in 1985. All the hotels in the group have been custom-designed and built, and provide quality, affordable accommodation. There is a range of hotels from the sophisticated Courtyard Hotels, the business class City Lodge, the value for money Town Lodge, and the options of the Road Lodge.

What’s it like

There are 135 rooms that are much smaller than the City Lodge, considering this is one option below the City Lodge. The service is different, the decor is different and the Town Lodge has a different, more budget-type feel. The rooms are very functional yet very basic. This is a place to sleep only! If you are a budget-conscious business traveller, then this is perfectly adequate. There was no atmosphere and sense of life when we stayed there. However, it was a Saturday night in the middle of the month!

Where is it

Herman Road, Harmelia ext 2, Germiston. Situated alongside the R24 airport freeway, the hotel is easily accessible to all the main feeder motorways.

Room facilities

Fully carpeted room with a view of the parking lot; a small TV with limited channels and a small desk if you wish to work; a shower in the bathroom, and tea and coffee-making facilities.

Other facilities

The Sundowner Bar offers drinks and a big screen TV to view the sport.  The restaurant serves buffet breakfasts in the morning. There is a vending machine if you are starving – very possible! Fax and photocopying services are available, and same-day laundry and dry cleaning services. There is a sparkling swimming pool to reinvigorate you and wireless Internet is available in all rooms. The parking is free, easy and secure.

Verdict

The hotel is a two-star and this was very evident. Our air-conditioner didn’t work and it was very hot within the rooms. The staff at reception were great – however, the bar staff were below average. They need to be a tad more interested in their clientele. If you are hungry there are a few takeaway places down the road or a small shop that sells cool drinks, etc. A shuttle bus service is available for the ten-minute trip to and from OR Tambo international airport at a nominal fee. In keeping with the City Lodge service, when you leave the hotel you can enjoy a take-away muffin! The Town Lodge is functional, very basic; serves its purpose and the room was impeccably clean.
