According to eTurboNews, flights to Chileka Airport in Blantyre, Malawi, have been suspended until 29 March as a result of maintenance work on the runway.
Passengers booked on Kenya Airways to Blantyre during this period will be rebooked on flights to Lilongwe’s Kamuzu International Airport, and will have to make their own way to Blantyre by road.
Alternatively, KQ has offered a full refund for unused tickets or a partial refund for sectors not yet flown, and have additionally allowed one free re-booking for passengers holding tickets to Blantyre.
Two weeks ago KQ was subjected to a sudden withdrawal of its 5th freedom traffic rights between Lilongwe and Lusaka. The Malawian Civil Aviation Authority terminated the arrangement with immediate effect after newly-launched Malawian Airlines commenced flights to the Zambia capital.
UPDATE: SAA and Ethiopian Airlines have also suspended flights to Chileka until the maintenance of the runway is complete.
